What is Strategic Vision? How to develop this competence?
It is the ability to detect opportunities and visualize competitiveness scenarios, as well as the ability to design actions and activities to take advantage of those situations proactively. It involves having the ability to develop action plans, monitor and evaluate both progress and results.
People with this strategic mindset usually perform analysis of environmental trends and know how to interpret changes in the environment to anticipate possible scenarios. They know how to design and plan actions to energize and take advantage of the strengths of the team and their company. They are also flexible to review and adapt their plans while being aware of the changes that are taking place.
They are also often attentive to indicators that allow them to monitor their objectives and adjust plans in an accurate and timely manner. This competence therefore has to do with initiative, business and results orientation and flexibility, as well as planning capacity.
This competence is highly valued in the leaders of today’s organizations, since they are able to transmit to the teams a sense of commitment and purpose that gives coherence and meaning to the organization and the work of the people to achieve the vision of the organization.
HOW CAN I TRAIN MY STRATEGIC VISION?
1. Reflect by performing a SWOT analysis on the current situation of your department or team. Remember that this acronym corresponds to:
o D- Weaknesses
o A- Threats
o F- Strengths
o O- Opportunities
The strengths and weaknesses correspond to a reflection of the internal characteristics of the team. Opportunities and threats have to do with the characteristics of the environment and the competition or sector in which the team is currently operating.
About the environment, look at these aspects and how they influence your company and team:
• Political: What is the influence of the current situation on my business? What will be the forecast? How can I anticipate and adapt my strategy to changes?
• Economic: What is the influence of the current situation on my business? What will be the forecast? How can I anticipate and adapt my strategy to changes?
• Social: What is the influence of the current situation on my business? What will be the forecast? How can I anticipate and adapt my strategy to changes?
• Technological: What is the influence of the current situation on my business? What will be the forecast? How can I anticipate and adapt my strategy to changes?
• Legal: What is the influence of the current situation on my business? What will be the forecast? How can I anticipate and adapt my strategy to changes?
• Environmental: What is the influence of the current situation on my business? What will be the forecast? How can I anticipate and adapt my strategy to changes?
Answer these questions in writing and write down any ideas you can think of:
How can I use my strengths to better take advantage of my opportunities?
How can I minimize my weaknesses and be better positioned to overcome my threats?
What do I have to do to overcome my weaknesses, to be able to take advantage of my opportunities?
How can I use my strengths to overcome my biggest threats?
2. Define your vision and the goal you want to achieve professionally or in your team for this year.
Reflect and write down your thoughts on these issues:
• Define your goal: Is it aligned with your strategy? And with your values? Do you feel identified with it and motivated to achieve it?
• Set a date: When do you want to get it? Is it concrete? Is it ambitious and realistic at the same time?
• Establish the actions to achieve it: What would you have had to do to achieve it? What have you had to stop doing?
• Find resources: What sources of help can you rely on to get it? What resources do you have to achieve this?
• Identify your success meter: How will you know you’ve reached it? What will be your indicator of success?
• Monitoring and review: How often are you going to review what you are getting? How are you going to track it? How will you adapt your actions to the changes in the situation that may occur?
